As defensive end Julius Peppers expected, the Carolina Panthers announced Tuesday that they have no plan to place franchise tag on him, letting Thursday’s deadline pass by and Peppers make his own choice about his future career as an unrestricted free agent.
“With the magnitude of the contract, the tender that it would take to franchise him and how it fits into the big picture with our team, we made the decision to not franchise him,” Panthers GM Marty Hurney said. “Obviously, it’s a very difficult decision because he’s a tremendous player.”
Thus after March 5, Peppers will have the right to sign with any team he likes to play for. Seeming happy to learn that the Panthers would not tag him, Peppers released a statement through his agent on the same day, saying that he felt good to have the opportunity to visit with other teams and his next goal will be to find the right match for his skill set. Forget the eight seasons he played in Panthers jerseys, and try to believe his new phase of career will be better, or at least as good as he has expected.

Panthers DT Tyler on season-ending IR now
The Carolina Panthers made quick moves really. Placing defensive tackle Tank Tyler on injured reserve Friday, the team then had Tyler’s replacement by claiming Derek Landri off waivers from the Jacksonville Jaguars soon later on the same day.
Which ended Tyler’s season was a knee injury which he suffered during last Sunday’s loss to the New York Jets. The Panthers had to be quick as they have learned quite a lot from losing the 10 players to injuries for season.
Comparing to Tyler, who made 13 tackles in six games he played in the Panthers jersey after being acquired from the Kansas City Chiefs, 6-foot-2, 290-pound Landri appeared in just seven games and made 13 tackles while playing in Jaguars jersey, being listed inactive for the past four weeks

Win over Falcons changed opinions on Panthers QB Delhomme
Wearing No.13 NFL jersey does not necessarily mean unlucky to the Carolina Panthers quarterback Jake Delhomme, but keeping leading his team to loss just caused people to doubt whether he is worth the trust of Coach John Fox. Sunday’s win over the Atlanta Falcons just came in time to clear the doubts on Delhomme’s ability.
People used to consider if backup Josh McCown had not been lost for the season, Delhomme might have been sent to the bench weeks ago, and he was a have-to choice for starting job simply because the team had only inexperienced Matt Moore behind Delhomme.
Throwing 13 interceptions totally in the season, Delhomme made Sunday’s win his third consecutive game without throwing an interception, turning his season around completely.
"I’ve had fun the last three weeks," Delhomme said. "It didn’t get any lower than the Buffalo game, for whatever reason. I had to say, ‘the heck with it’ and keep swinging. The last few weeks have really been fun."
As for the next three games against the Dolphins, Jets and Buccaneers, the quarterback now at least has enough confidence to lead his team to a possible win, and even to the playoff.

NFL announced fined players
This week the players who received fines from the NFL include the Arizona Cardinals safety Antrel Rolle, tackle Levi Brown, the Indianapolis Colts cornerback Jacob Lacey, the Carolina Panthers running back DeAngelo Williams, Cleveland Browns linebacker Kaluka Maiava, New York Giants running back Ahmad Bradshaw and safety Michael Johnson.
Cardinals Rolle was fined $7,500 for hitting tight end Kevin Boss of the Giants in last Sunday’s win, and Brown was fined $5,000 for a chop block, the same as the Panthers Williams, who did the chop block in last Sunday’s loss to the Buffalo Bills while picking up a blitz.
Colts Lacey received a fine of $10,000 because he went to the ground to celebrate after a touchdown in a win over St. Louis Rams and the league considered that was unsportsmanlike conduct.

Quadriceps strain made Cowboys RB Barber inactive for Monday game against Panthers
The Dallas Cowboys running back Marion Barber was hurt on a 35-yard run on his final carry in last week’s loss to the New York Giants. Afterwards, he was limited in practice and then was ruled out for Monday night’s game against the Carolina Panthers.
After being hurt, Barber had said that he wanted to play against the Panthers even though he was unable to take part in a full practice with the injury. However, the team finally to put him into rest and have Felix Jones starting in Barber’s place. It was still uncertain when Barber would be back to the field.
As for the Panthers, they also lost several players because of injuries. Linebacker Na’il Diggs was out with bruised ribs, starting strong safety Chris Harris injured knee, fullback Brad Hoover injured back spasms and defensive Everette Brown had ankle hurt. Returning players include defensive tackle Nick Hayden, who was back with the team after missing last week’s game against the Atlanta Falcons because of bruised toe.

TCU AD Morrison succeeded son of Panthers owner as team president
One day after Mark Richardson, son of Carolina Panthers owner Jerry Richardson, announced his resignations, the 73-year-old owner gave the job to Texas Christian University athletic director Danny Morrison, giving a major front office job to someone outside the family for the first time in a decade.
Morrison said he would begin his new job by the end of the month and take over the team’s day-to-day business operations while Richardson is recovering from a February heart transplant. The 55-year-old worked as AD at Richardson’s alma mater Wofford College, which was also site of Carolina’s training camp, before he went to TCU in 2005.
“We are very familiar with Danny and he is very familiar with our organization,” Richardson said in a statement. “He has been successful as a college administrator and commissioner and brings a business expertise and sense of community that fits the position perfectly.”
Richardson’s son Jon Richardson also resigned on the same day his brother Mark Richardson made the announcement. It was uncertain whether the two resigned because of a family rift.

Panthers RB Williams missed practice with sore knee
Carolina Panthers running back DeAngelo Williams did not practice with teammates Wednesday. Instead, he worked on a stationary bike with a sore knee.
No one could tell when the pain started and Coach John Fox wouldn’t even say which knee it was. But it seemed it was not serious and Williams was joking with teammates while riding on bike.
Thus the Panthers top two running backs were both out with injury. Jonathan Stewart had a pain in his left tendon and had missed 14 practices. The two combined to rush for 2,351 yards last season, recording as the highest total for teammates in the NFL in 24 years.
Other missing players included linebacker Jon Beason with knee injury, safety Charles Godfrey with hand injury and safety Nate Salley with knee problem. Tackle Travelle Wharton was absent for personal matter.
