Bengals and RT Andre Smith signed four-year contract

The sixth overall pick Andre Smith finally got the contract he wanted from the Cincinnati Bengals, a four-year deal including $21 million guaranteed on Sunday, thus he would stop holdout and join the afternoon practice in time to play with his new teammates.

The impasse dragged so long into the preseason because the Bengals had insisted on paying Smith less than a player taken later in the draft, Oakland's Darrius Heyward-Bey, who got a got a five-year deal with $23.5 million guaranteed from the Raiders. And fortunately they reached agreements before the start of a late afternoon practice, allowing Smith to take part in the afternoon practice and do some drills with other linemen.

Because Smith had missed the first three preseason games, he will lose the starting job at right tackle. It is even unclear whether he is scheduled to play in the Thursday preseason game against the Indianapolis Colts.

Crabtree was not satisfied with 49ers latest offer of $20-million contract

As the first round pick, Michael Crabtree thought he was worth more than $20 million, but the San Francisco 49ers seemed unwilling to offer more than that or what ninth-overall pick B.J. Raji got from the Packers.

Raji’s contract was for $28.5M and five years, and Crabtree could make up to $26.5 million with incentives and up to $16 million guaranteed from the 49ers. But the first-rounder still has not planned to accept that. He has told reported that he would like to sit out the 2009 season and re-enter the draft in 2010 if he doesn't get the kind of money he's seeking.

Crabtree was thus one of the two first-rounders who had not signed contracts. The other one is Andre Smith, who has not had deal done with the Bengals.

Bills WR Owens in good health status and will probably play next week

On Thursday, the Buffalo Bills were glad to see their wide receiver Terrell Owens in progress. During the practice, Owens took part in work out and caught passes in individuals’ drills.

Coach Dick Jauron was encouraged and began to believe that the receiver would be cleared to start practicing fully next week. Since Owens jammed his foot in the Hall of Fame game on Aug. 9, he had not played much and from Tuesday to Thursday it was the most time he had practiced after being injured.

Owens has been ruled out by Jauron from playing in the preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Saturday, together with running back Fred Jackson who had missed practices with a sprained wrist.

Panthers RB Williams missed practice with sore knee

Carolina Panthers running back DeAngelo Williams did not practice with teammates Wednesday. Instead, he worked on a stationary bike with a sore knee.

No one could tell when the pain started and Coach John Fox wouldn’t even say which knee it was. But it seemed it was not serious and Williams was joking with teammates while riding on bike.

Thus the Panthers top two running backs were both out with injury. Jonathan Stewart had a pain in his left tendon and had missed 14 practices. The two combined to rush for 2,351 yards last season, recording as the highest total for teammates in the NFL in 24 years.

Other missing players included linebacker Jon Beason with knee injury, safety Charles Godfrey with hand injury and safety Nate Salley with knee problem. Tackle Travelle Wharton was absent for personal matter.

Chargers LB Merriman is not in top form yet

On Tuesday, the last day of the San Diego Chargers’ training camp, linebacker Shawne Merriman sat out both practices because of his injured knee, but he said that there’s nothing to be alarmed about because he was just working his way back to top form.

“I’m still progressing,” he said. “When I’ll be 100 percent is when I feel like I’ll be able to go out there and do everything without thinking about it. Thing is, I’ll go out there and do it, but I’m still thinking about it. That’s the thing. It’s not whether I can do it or not. I can do it. You have to self-consciously think about things when you’re not 100 percent.”

The knee surgery sidelined Merriman after the season opener in 2008, and he said that he had been able to do better than before the surgery. Indeed, he got to Arizona quarterback Kurt Warner a few times in Saturday night’s win over the Cardinals but didn’t get a sack. Merriman needs to do more during the remaining three weeks before the regular season to reach his record of 39 1/2 sacks his first three seasons.

Two Dolphins were suspected of swine flu

Two defensive backs of the Miami Dolphins, Sean Smith and Jason Allen were kept out of Saturday night’s exhibition game against the Carolina Panthers. The reason was a bit scary-they came down with flulike symptoms and were suspected by some teammates of being affected with swine flu.

Smith and Allen underwent tests and remained at the team hotel during the game. By so far the team said they did not get the test results yet. Coach Tony Sparano said nothing had been confirmed about the flulike symptoms. Smith’s agent, David Canter, said his client was already feeling better and planning to take part in the team’s next practice Monday.

Quarterback Chad Pennington also said he never heard of swine flu when he was told about that Smith and Allen were ill. But there were still suspicion among the players who considered the virus a possibility.

“You see it on TV,” running back Ronnie Brown said. “To actually have it be close—you read so much about it, but to have it affect you a little, that’s kind of scary. We have to make sure to wash our hands, stay clean, be careful and do the right things.”

Cowboys won over Titans by 30-10 on Friday preseason game

The Dallas Cowboys fans were completely satisfied with what they saw at the nearly $1.2 billion Cowboys Stadium on Friday night. The new stadium was dazzling, the player in No. 9 dallas cowboys jersey went 18 of 24 for 192 yards, and the team won over the Tennessee Titans.

The stadium opened two hours before the game started, and fans finally could say how humongous the overhead video boards are and some went to find the best standing-room spots. Even the players also felt happy for finally getting to play in this place they’ve heard so much about for so long, and that was maybe why they played up to the mood for most of the time.

In the first half, it was the Titans’ advantage. The team went three and out on its first three drives. Kerry Collins threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Justin Gage and put the Titans up 10-7 when there was only 59 seconds left in the first half. However, the Titans did not gain score again then on and the Cowboys gave a much more steady performance. After gaining 249 yards and 17 first downs in the first half, Dallas backup quarterback Jon Kitna threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to undrafted rookie Kevin Ogletree and third-stringer Stephen McGee threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Rodney Hannah in the second half.

Raiders QB Garcia expected to play Saturday against former team 49ers

The Oakland Raiders will play a preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers on Saturday night, and quarterback Jeff Garcia, who started 71 games in five seasons with the 49ers, will be available for playing in the game, but it is unsure how long and what he’ll be able to do, regarding that he has just recovered from a calf injury.

The 39-year-old quarterback was sidelined for two weeks before he returned to the field. He did take part in the Raiders’ first two days of training camp, but was kept out of the team’s first donned pads by a sore left calf muscle. He returned just in time to take part in the joint workouts with the 49ers and worked with backup offense. Quarterback JaMarcus Russell took most of the starter’s work.

Coach Tom Cable expected Garcia to play in the second quarter, while starters will be used through the first half. So the former 49ers player would have some time to see 49ers fans reaction to his return. However, he knows well that he probably won’t get the reception while wearing raiders jersey from the San Francisco crowd he once did.

Returning of Favre helped Vikings sell tickets

Within 24 hours after news broke that Brett Favre signed with the Vikings, 3,200 Vikings season tickets were sold and 11,000 single-game tickets were snatched up by fans. What a Favre effect!

What is more, there have been several hundred pre-orders for brett favre jersey placed online Tuesday. Also a lot of fans lined the streets to catch a glimpse of Favre on Tuesday. Of course, ticked demand and prices soared at online broker RazorGator.com, with prices for Favre playing against the Packers in Green Bay on Nov. 1 leaping from $441.48 to $975.56, and prices for home game on Oct. 5 when Packers come to the Metrodome from $263.13 to $402.48.

Lions kicker Hanson underwent surgery on injured knee

Detroit Lions kicker Jason Hanson nagging knee injury needed a surgical procedure to remedy. So the Lions signed free-agent kicker Swayze Waters on Tuesday, the same day when Hanson underwent the surgery.

Coach Jim Schwartz would not say if the procedure was done on Hanson's kicking leg, but he said that Hanson was expected to be back with the team soon. Surely. As the franchise's career scoring leader and one of just six men in NFL history with more than 400 field goals, Hanson has been selected to two Pro Bowl teams during his 17-year career. Losing him would mean more than losing a kicker for the Lions.

I guess the Lions did prepare for a quick return of Hanson. They signed Waters to replace Cody Spencer, not Hanson as I thought before. Spencer was put on injured reserve after tearing an ACL during Saturday's exhibition win over the Atlanta Falcons.

Broncos Moreno will return within two weeks

The Broncos fans will probably be able to see Knowshon Moreno play wearing denver broncos jersey in the Broncos’ last preseason game on September 3rd against the Cardinals, because it is reported that Moreno will be available for playing within two weeks.

The coming of the new running back excited the team a lot and even more when Moreno managed a nine-yard carry on his first touch during Friday’s game against the 49ers. However, he was injured. So team have to change their plan to use him over the next two weeks.

The Broncos still have Correll Buckhalter at the top of the team’s depth chart, but it seems that they plan to have Moreno to get in that position once he is back with the team.

49ers planned to sign Crabtree before exhibition opener against Broncos

Although the deadline has passed Friday for the San Francisco 49ers to trade their top draft pick Michael Crabtree, the team president Jed York still insisted that the team will sign with Crabtree, most likely before the 49ers’ exhibition opener against the Denver Broncos.

Crabtree was the 10th overall draft pick, and he wants to get a contract that is comparable to the higher pick, such as the No. 7 pick Darrius Heyward-Bey and the 8th pick Eugene Monroe.

Receiver Heyward-Bey received a five-year contract from the Oakland Raiders late last month. The contract will guarantee him at least $23.5 million. As for Monroe, he signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars on Friday and also got a five-year contract, which will pay him $25 million with $19 million guaranteed for playing with jaguars jersey on.

QB Brady led Patriots to victory over Eagles

In the preseason opener on Thursday night, quarterback Tom Brady led the New England Patriots to a 27-25 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles. A lot of fans could not help to kiss the tom brady jersey they are wearing. That was really a good beginning for the Pats taking that it was Brady’s first game since tearing ligaments in his left knee in Week 1 last year.

Brady was still wearing a protective brace, but he ran well in the pocket and appeared to be not affected by the surgically repaired left knee. He also managed to complete 10 of 15 passes for 100 yards with one interception and throw two touchdown passes to tight end Chris Baker respectively in the first and second quarter, making only one mistake in the first quarter when he had a pass intercepted by cornerback Sheldon Brown.

The two-time Super Bowl MVP had started 128 consecutive games before he sat out the entire exhibition season last year because of an unspecified foot injury.

Colts safety Bethea broke his right hand

During Indianapolis Colts Wednesday practices, safety Antoine Bethea had to stay on the sideline for both sessions, because he has cracked a bone in his right hand.

Colts coach Jim Caldwell didn't give a timetable for Bethea's return, but he said that Bethea would return when he can play while wearing a cast. I guess he would not feel happy to see troy polamalu jersey hot on sale, not his.

The Colts would not like to lose another safety in Bethea since they are still unsure about when safety Bob Sanders will be back for the regular-season opener next month. They must have Bethea, who went to the Pro Bowl in 2007 when Sanders was the NFL's defensive player of the year, in their defense during Sanders’ absence.

Raiders may compete with Saints for OLB Brooks?

According to National Football Post, it is possible that the New Orleans Saints will have competition with the Oakland Raiders for free agent linebacker Derrick Brooks.

The New Orleans has been in their pursuit of Brooks since news broke that veteran Mark Simoneau will undergo surgery to repair a torn triceps. Since Simoneau missed all last season while recovering from back surgery, it was no wonder that the Saints changed their target to the 11-time Pro Bowler Brooks, in hope of bringing some help to their defense.

As for the Raiders, it is still unknown how much they are interested in the veteran linebacker, who spent his whole 14-year career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. At the moment, the Raiders have Ricky Brown at middle linebacker, Thomas Howard to be the starter and rookie Slade Norris to replace injured Jon Alston.

Arthroscopic surgery will keep Bucs WR Bryant out of training camp

According to Associated Press, Tampa Bay Buccaneers receiver Antonio Bryant will undergo arthroscopic surgery on the torn meniscus in his left knee. Bryant will not be able to play in for the remainder of training camp, but he will be ready to play in the regular-season opener against Dallas on Sept. 13.

"We're going to go ahead and work on that knee ... clean that thing out, get him ready for the season," coach Raheem Morris said after practice Monday.

Morris said Bryant hurt his knee on the night when he posted the second-best receiving performance in Bucs history with nine catches for 200 yards and two touchdowns in a loss at Carolina last December. Since then, Bryant occasionally has had problems with the knee and that was the reason why he missed three days of practice before working out with the team on Friday and Saturday. The knee swelled up again when he was back on the sideline Monday.

Latest information of injured Steelers

On Sunday, Pittsburgh Steelers nose tackle Casey Hampton left practice with a knee injury, and second-year wide receiver Limas Sweed also did not finish practice because of hamstring injury. Running back Willie Parker still sat out for back spasms. Outside linebacker LaMarr Woodley returned after sitting out three days with swelling in his right knee.

Hampton missed three games last season with a groin injury. As a four-time Pro Bowl player, he is considered the key to the Steelers' league-leading rushing defense, and coach Mike Tomlin expected that he would be fine and able to play during regular season.

Sweed was Steelers' second-round pick in 2008. He may be the No.1 top candidate to replace Nate Washington, who chose to wear titans jersey. Parker has been out of practice for the second straight day as the Steelers worked on their goal-line offense for the first time since camp began July 31.

T.O. thinks it unreasonable for Chargers to fine players for tweet

Bills Terrell Owens defended the San Diego cornerback Antonio Cromartie on Friday, saying that it was ridiculous to fine a player for criticizing the food service at training camp on Twitter.

While Chargers coach Norv Turner said that players should not criticize the Chargers’ organization in tweets, Owens thought that it was no harm for a player to say his honest opinion about the cafeteria food.

“What’s wrong with that?” he said. “It’s no different than saying practice is too hard.”

As Bills coach Dick Jauron and team officials also told their players to be careful with their tweet, Owens was asked about cuisine at Bills training camp, too. He grinned and said that cafeteria food at Bills training camp was the best selection he has been around.

It was reported around Browns WR Stallworth met with Goodell

It was firstly reported by the Miami’s WPLG-TV, then ESPN.com, then The Plain Dealer and then Yahoo Sports. They said that a meeting took place in New York between indefinitely suspended WR Donte Stallworth and NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. They believed that the meeting was about a possible reinstatement.

However, all reports came from anonymous sources. Official sources just declined to confirm or make comments. NFL spokesman Greg Aiello refused to give details of review process on Stallworth, and Browns coach Eric Mangini declined to comment on Stallworth’s status. Both said they would only make announcement when any decision is made.

Since a lot of NFL news from anonymous sources proved to be true, we can still expect a decision on the Browns WR to be released in near future.

Bears RB Jones is eager to prove himself this season

Bears running back Kevin Jones is looking forward to this season to prove he has been fully recovered from injuries.

Jones was taken by the Lions as a first-round pick in 2004 and rushed for 1,133 yards as a rookie. But he has been plagued by injuries since. Last year he was signed by the bears but has been struggling as he recovered from injuries. That make Jones role tail off while teammate Matt Forte has emerged as one of the NFL’s top young running backs.

Now he finally felt like himself while running in nfl jersey and is ready to be the second man behind Forte in a solid, one-two punch for the Bears.

Vikings QB Jackson continues rehab work

After skipping Sunday practice, Minnesota Vikings quarterback Tarvaris Jackson missed both practices again on Monday while doing rehab work on his left knee injury caused by an accident on Saturday practice.

Jackson has spent time with his teammates outside the training camp since spraining his MCL on Saturday, but at the moment he was only able to ride a bicycle and do some light jogging. Because he still walked with a slight limp, he has to watch practice while wearing a sleeve on his knee.

Coach Brad Childress said taht he is not sure about when Jackson will return to the team but is confident he will be just fine. Childress said Jackson will return whe has the ability to protect himself while playing. So we will not wait long before seeing Jackson wearing his vikings jersey again.

Browns coach Mangini intends to stick with his choice of Quinn and Anderson

The Browns new coach Eric Mangini has made his mind that he will keep both Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn within the team when the regular season begins.

Mangini said Sunday that he will not switch starters on a weekly basis. After he selects a start quarterback between Anderson and Quinn, he still wants the other to stay with the Browns. It is believed that the Browns could be approached by other teams looking for a quarterback later this summer, but Mangini intends to see both Anderson and Quinn staying with the team for the foreseeable future. He just hopes that both will stay with Ravens and wear Ravens nfl jerseys.

Before the Browns play their first preseason game Aug. 15 in Green Bay, Anderson and Quinn will be competing for the starting job.
