Chargers LB Merriman is not in top form yet

On Tuesday, the last day of the San Diego Chargers’ training camp, linebacker Shawne Merriman sat out both practices because of his injured knee, but he said that there’s nothing to be alarmed about because he was just working his way back to top form.

“I’m still progressing,” he said. “When I’ll be 100 percent is when I feel like I’ll be able to go out there and do everything without thinking about it. Thing is, I’ll go out there and do it, but I’m still thinking about it. That’s the thing. It’s not whether I can do it or not. I can do it. You have to self-consciously think about things when you’re not 100 percent.”

The knee surgery sidelined Merriman after the season opener in 2008, and he said that he had been able to do better than before the surgery. Indeed, he got to Arizona quarterback Kurt Warner a few times in Saturday night’s win over the Cardinals but didn’t get a sack. Merriman needs to do more during the remaining three weeks before the regular season to reach his record of 39 1/2 sacks his first three seasons.
