Lions kicker Hanson underwent surgery on injured knee

Detroit Lions kicker Jason Hanson nagging knee injury needed a surgical procedure to remedy. So the Lions signed free-agent kicker Swayze Waters on Tuesday, the same day when Hanson underwent the surgery.

Coach Jim Schwartz would not say if the procedure was done on Hanson's kicking leg, but he said that Hanson was expected to be back with the team soon. Surely. As the franchise's career scoring leader and one of just six men in NFL history with more than 400 field goals, Hanson has been selected to two Pro Bowl teams during his 17-year career. Losing him would mean more than losing a kicker for the Lions.

I guess the Lions did prepare for a quick return of Hanson. They signed Waters to replace Cody Spencer, not Hanson as I thought before. Spencer was put on injured reserve after tearing an ACL during Saturday's exhibition win over the Atlanta Falcons.
